Rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to inform residents, road users and businesses of the rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive between Duinefontein Road Bridge and Highlands Drive in the Mitchells Plain area. The work is planned to take place from today, 30 September 2024, until Friday, 4 April 2025, from morning to sunset, Monday to Saturday, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.
The road rehabilitation work between Duinefontein Road Bridge and Highlands Drive will include:
- Milling and removal of existing pavement layers for the full width of roadway, including shoulders.
- Recycling and stabilisation of existing layer works with cement
- Placing asphalt surfacing
- Reshaping the existing earth drains to allow free draining of water to the detention ponds
- The reinstatement of all road markings and reflective road studs removed during the process.
'The road and stormwater system in this area is in a very poor condition and needs rehabilitation and maintenance work to ensure that we prolong the longevity of the City's road network. I'm proud that we are starting this project just as we are about to celebrate Transport Month, which intends to focus attention on our efforts to keep Capetonians moving. By rehabilitating roads, we also ensure motorists can enjoy improved road safety conditions. I want to thank the public and road users for their patience and support over the next few months. Roadworks by nature are inconvenient, but we will try our best to limit the impact. Wherever possible, I am advising all to consider taking alternative routes. Those who need to use this section of Jakes Gerwel Drive are advised to adhere to all temporary road signs in the area,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The work areas will be demarcated on a daily basis to regulate traffic flow through the affected area, with possible lane closures while the reconstruction of the road is in process. Only one lane will be open to traffic in each direction during work times.
